Guan Tianlang may have pulled out of U.S. Open qualifying, but that doesn’t mean he is taking the week off.
The 14-year-old from China has accepted a sponsor exemption into the Fedex St. Jude Classic, scheduled for June 6-9 at TPC Southwind in Memphis.
That means Guan will play in back-to-back events, after it was announced earlier this week that he had received a special invite into The Memorial.
“Guan’s invitation was a no-brainer,” St. Jude Classic tournament director Phil Cannon said in a release. “He certainly has made a big splash in the sports world. And we are excited our fans will get to witness history.”
The St. Jude event will be Guan’s fifth start since the beginning of April. He played the weekend at both the Masters and Zurich Classic before missing the cut last week at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
Guan told the USGA shortly after he received a sponsor exemption into the Memorial that he wanted to be removed from the field for the June 3 U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Texas. The USGA had offered to help Guan with travel, but he declined.
