Gulbis moves past malaria, healthy for Kraft

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Natalie Gulbis is back.

Gulbis is scheduled to tee it up in the Kraft Nabisco Championship Thursday in her first event since she contracted malaria and withdrew from the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore four weeks ago.

“I feel good,” Gulbis said. “It’s been a pretty rough month. I've been trying to play, and then I'll fall back and rest for a couple of days, and then I try to play again, and I'm back to square one. Hopefully, I'm past that part. I'm doing better every day.”

Gulbis played 18 holes on Tuesday for the first time since withdrawing in Singapore. She is now off medication with a clean bill of health from her doctors. She went to the Kia Classic two weeks ago and tried to play but withdrew after nine holes of a practice round with fatigue.

Gulbis has some good history at Kraft Nabisco. She tied for eighth here last year after shooting a final-round 65, the low score that day. She tied for third in 2006.

“I love this golf course,” Gulbis said. “I’m more excited, I think, than I’ve ever been to play.”
