Haas has lead, not crowd love

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bill Haas circled into the first-round lead at the Wells Fargo Championship late Thursday with an 8-under 64, not that anyone with a Carolina zip code is surprised by his climb.

Haas was born in Charlotte, lives in Greenville, S.C., about an hour and half down the road and has regular games with his father, Jay, at Quail Hollow, where he is a member.

He also went to school at Wake Forest, but if he was looking for support from the Demon Deacon crowd it didn’t take long to realize he’d be waiting a while.

“I joked at the beginning of the round I was going to count the ‘Go Deacs’ cheers out there over the ‘Go Heels’ cheers,” Haas smiled. “After a couple of holes I knew I was outnumbered.”

It didn’t help that Haas was playing with Davis Love III, who was also born in Charlotte, and Mark Wilson who both attended . . . wait for it, the University of North Carolina.
