The World Golf Hall of Fame induction ceremony is moving to the same week as The Players Championship.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced today that the ceremony will take place on Monday, May 9, of next year at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine Fla. That will lead off The Players Championship week with the first round of the tournament beginning three days later at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach just up the road from the World Golf Village.
“Moving the ceremony to the spring will heighten the event’s exposure in a variety of ways and will add a new level of excitement to The Players for fans, media, sponsors and past and current players,” Finchem, a World Golf Hall of Fame board member, said in a statement.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony has been held in the fall, where critics have complained that it’s too much an afterthought at season’s end and overshadowed by football. The ceremony was not held last fall with World Golf Hall of Fame leadership pondering changes.
Ballots for the 2011 class of inductees are out with voting results to be announced later this year. Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Retief Goosen, Davis Love IIIColin Montgomerie are among active players on the newest list of candidates.
