NEWPORT, Wales – Rough start for Padraig Harrington.
The three-time major champion was the only European player who failed to make a birdie in the opening fourballs session, a format designed to be a birdie blitz. He and Luke Donald were trounced 3-and-2 by American rookies Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton. Making matters worse, Harrington had a tough shot Saturday morning from a fairway bunker at the second hole in his foursomes match in his second game. He blasted the shot into the face of the bunker and watched it ricochet back toward him, where it came to rest near his feet.
Harrington is a proven winner, but he’s under some pressure after he failed to qualify for the European team and forced captain Colin Montgomerie to use a captain’s pick to take him. Harrington has failed to win a Ryder Cup match in his last 10 tries. He arrived 0-7-2 in the last two Ryder Cups.
