Healthy Woodland leads Torrey Pines through 54

RSS

SAN DIEGO – Gary Woodland has been more prone to injury playing golf than basketball.

Go figure.

In 2009, he underwent shoulder surgery because of inflammation in his rotator cuff. Three years later, he injured both wrists in a matter of months – his left in April, his right in August.

Only last summer did Woodland begin to feel healthy again, and it’s little wonder now that he’s once again in position to win.

Woodland ended a two-year drought with a victory at the opposite-field event in Reno in August, then narrowly missed opportunities at the Barclays (T-2) and CIMB Classic (playoff loss, to Ryan Moore).

Here at Torrey Pines, Woodland leads by one at 8-under 208.

“My body feels good,” he said. “I’m as healthy as I’ve been since I’ve been out here (on Tour), so it’s nice to be healthy and nice to be able to play good golf.”
