Brandt Snedeker is the only American in the field at this week’s Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain and considering how difficult his journey was from Jacksonville, Fla. to Andalucia it’s no real surprise that he’s the only U.S. player in the 24-man field.
Snedeker began his journey on Monday afternoon, flying from Jacksonville to Miami to catch his connection to Madrid. About two hours away from the European coast another passenger on Snedeker’s flight suffered a heart attack and the plane had to be diverted to the Azores for the medical emergency.
After about a 2 ½-hour delay, Snedeker’s flight finally arrived in Spain but somewhere along the way the airline had lost the American’s luggage. Snedeker’s golf clubs were scheduled to arrive on Wednesday at 1 p.m., and he planned to play the morning pro-am with a piecemeal replacement set.
And Snedeker thought his Round 1 opponent at the Match Play, Thomas Bjorn, was going to be tough.
