History favors Internationals in best ball session

The American squad would be happy to walk away with a draw in the Friday session of fourball matches in the Presidents Cup.

Since the schedule changed in 2003 to include a day with just one session of six fourballs, the Americans are a dismal 6-15-4.

The Americans have never won in the session of best ball matches, managing a 3-3 draw at Harding Park in 2009 and going 2-2-2 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in 2005.

In 2003, the Internationals swept the session – played on Saturday – at Fancourt. It was the first and only pairs session in the event's history where the Americans failed to earn a point.

Despite the inadequate play in this particular session, captain Fred Couples kept four teams intact from the Thursday foursomes. The 2009 juggernaut of Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods were split; Woods partnering with Dustin Johnson. Stricker joined up with Matt Kuchar.

Couples said Thursday it was the plan all along.

'We were going to do that Tuesday and Wednesday, we were going to putt Tiger with Dustin in best ball, and that's what we did and we stuck to that,' he said.
