Holmes disappointed he wasnt captains pick

RSS

LEMONT, Ill. – J.B. Holmes is disappointed he wasn’t one of the four American Ryder Cup captain’s picks announced today by Corey Pavin, and he’s slightly surprised Rickie Fowler was chosen, but he says it didn’t take him long to get over it with so much to play for this week at the BMW Championship.

“I wanted to be on that team,” Holmes said while hitting balls on the practice range Tuesday at Cog Hill.

Holmes said his heart rate elevated when he saw his cell phone light up with Pavin’s name near 10 p.m. Monday. He thought he had a good chance of being one of Pavin’s picks.

“I’ve played good all year,” Holmes said. “I had a bunch of top-20 finishes and some top 10s. I’ve only missed two cuts. It’s been a good year for me, so it’s disappointing.”

It’s widely believed Tiger Woods, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink were near locks to make the team over the last couple weeks. Rickie Fowler, a rookie who becomes the first American who’s never won a PGA Tour event to be named a captain’s pick, was believed to be the more difficult fourth pick. That final pick is believed to have come down to Fowler and Holmes.

Holmes tied for 11th at the Deutsche Bank Championship Monday. He was 2-0-1 helping the Americans win the Ryder Cup at Valhalla in his debut in the event two years ago.

“As many rookies as are on the team this year, and with it looking like Corey Pavin was going for more experience, I might be a little surprised,” Holmes said of the Fowler pick. “But there had been some talk about Rickie making it. There were a bunch of us right there. Rickie’s done great this year, and he’s going to be a great player. It’s a captain’s decision, and he did what he thought was best for the team.'
