Holmes singing Stocktons praises too

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Another Dave Stockton testimonial came out of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am's first round.

J.B. Holmes sounded a lot like Phil Mickelson when he explained how Stockton has helped him with his putting since they connected just three weeks ago.

“He just simplified it for me,” Holmes said after shooting 65 on the Pebble Beach course. “I just had way too many things going through my head, bad thoughts and everything else, especially with the putter. He kind of got me back to putting more like when I was a kid. Just look at the hole and hit it. Don't think about all the other stuff.”

Stockton got Holmes to ditch his belly putter when they met three weeks ago.

'He likes to forepress it, and you can't really forepress the belly putter,' Holmes said. 'I had kind of been wanting to go to the short putter anyway. I was kind of getting tired of the belly.'

Holmes has broken 70 in his last five rounds. He tied for third at the Northern Trust Open last week with four rounds in the 60s, the first time he’s done that since he won the FBR Open in 2006. He needed just 26 putts on Thursday.
