Hot weather not so hot starts

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The morning’s most prominent three-ball made the turn in less than stellar fashion on a day at The Players that already is disgustingly muggy.

Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Dustin Johnson teed off at 8:18 a.m. and only Johnson made the turn under par. The long bomber birdied his first and third holes of the day (Nos. 10 and 12) then made par on the next six holes to shoot 34.

Mickelson wowed the large North Florida galleries with a birdie on his first hole but made the turn at even par when he three-putted for bogey on the 18th hole. Els, the only two-time winner on Tour this year amongst the group, hasn’t looked comfortable and closed his first nine holes with consecutive bogeys at Nos. 17 and 18. He turned at 37.

Alex Prugh has set the early pace at 5 under with three holes remaining in his first round.
