If the Glover fits

Apologies for stirring the pot before the tilt has reached the proverbial seventh-inning stretch, but let’s say Tiger Woods doesn’t win the FedEx Cup despite those filthy 1-to-3 odds and “New York” Lucas Glover does? The Player of the Year vote could be more divisive than the health care debate.

For argument’s sake, let’s say Woods – who signed on to play next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship on Thursday and appears to have his playoff face firmly affixed – wins the BMW at Cog Hill and finishes his season with the FedEx Cup and six victories. It’s hard not to box up the PoY and Comeback Player of the Year trophies and FedEx them to Windermere, Fla.

Glover, however, could make things interesting with, say, a win at Barclays – completing his Big Apple two-step – and a solid finish at East Lake to win the season-long race. Add to that his U.S. Open victory at Bethpage, the season’s toughest course, fifth-place finish at Hazeltine National (third toughest), T-3 at Torrey Pines (fifth toughest), T-5 at Congressional (ninth toughest) and T-2 at Quail Hollow (16th toughest) and we’ve got a conversation starter.

And, unlike that health care row, there’s no need for name-calling.
