DORAL, Fla. – Japan’s Yuta Ikeda said as much relief as he felt finally making phone contact with friends in Sendai last night, he still found it hard to concentrate in the third round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Ikeda went to Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai, the Japanese city hit hardest by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake. He grew up in Chiba, about 200 miles away. He’s also spoken to his mother, grandparents and friends in Chiba who all told him they’re doing well.
“This is my job, I have to play golf, but my mind isn’t really here,” Ikeda said, according to a Japanese reporter who translated.
Ikeda, an eight-time Japan PGA Tour winner, shot 74 and is at 5-over 221.
