Intriguing Ryder Cup subplot in American grouping

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – There’s a terrific Ryder Cup audition as a subplot in the 1:30 p.m. (CT) grouping off the first tee in the third round of the PGA Championship.

J.B. Holmes (-6), Bubba Watson (-5) and Ryan Palmer (-5) are the second-to-last threesome off in front of the leaders. All three are trying to break into the top eight of the American Ryder Cup points list. The top eight automatically qualify for the team at the end of this championship.

The trio stands 18th (Watson), 19th (Holmes) and 20th (Palmer) on the points list. They also can make the team impressing American captain Corey Pavin, who gets four picks on Sept. 7. It’s a grouping that should hold Pavin’s interest all day.
