Japans Nomura challenged by thoughts of home

PHOENIX – Japan’s Haru Nomura feels great angst watching the world news at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup.

It hurts her to see what the earthquakes and tsunamis are doing to her country.

She’s the only player from Japan in this week’s field. She won the Monday qualifier to earn a spot. She left Japan two days before the massive 9.0 earthquake hit.

“My thoughts are home,” Nomura said through a translator, her manager, Nobi Kuga. “But my family’s fine, and that eases my mind somewhat.”

Nomura is from Yokoyama, about 300 miles south of Sendai, the Japanese city nearest the most massive earthquake’s epicenter.

“I have friends in Sendai, I've spoken to them and they are fine, but some of them have family they haven’t been able to contact,” Nomura said. “My thoughts are with them.”
