Johnson makes last-ditch effort to impress Love

NORTON, Mass. – In the final audition for a Ryder Cup spot, Dustin Johnson seems intent on making a lasting impression at TPC Boston.

Johnson moved into contention Sunday at the Deutsche Bank Championship with a third-round 65 that put him in a tie for third place. He is at 13-under 200, six shots behind Louis Oosthuizen.

More importantly, Johnson has the best position among the seven players vying for one of the final four spots on the Ryder Cup team. Captain Davis Love III will announce his wild-card selections on Tuesday.

“It’s one of those things where it can’t hurt to play good golf, especially when he’s picking on Tuesday morning,” Johnson said. “I really want to make that Ryder Cup team. That’s a big goal for me. I really enjoy playing on the team. I really think that I would be a good asset to the team, and I’ll be able to help them hopefully get the trophy back.”

His performance in Boston follows a T-3 at last week’s Barclays tournament, the second top 10 in his past four starts. The long-hitting Johnson, who represented the U.S. at both the 2010 Ryder Cup and 2011 Presidents Cup, missed nearly three months this season, including the year’s first major, because of a back injury.

Asked if he thinks he’s done enough to persuade Love, Johnson shrugged, “I don’t know. It’s up to the captain to decide that. As far as me personally, yeah, of course I think I have.”
