Johnson vs Villegas Twentysomething fun at Match Play

RSS

The most intriguing first-round match of the Accenture Match Play Championship pits Dustin Johnson against Camilo Villegas.

Johnson, 25, is red hot after winning at Pebble Beach and tying for third at Riviera. That’s some impressive golf on two terrific courses. He jumped from No. 55 in the Official World Golf Ranking the week before Riviera to No. 25 this week. Villegas is No. 26 in the world.

Villegas, 27, looked like he was soaring to another level winning the BMW Championship and Tour Championship at the end of the 2008 season but didn’t follow up with anything special last season. He recorded just one top-10 finish in his last 15 PGA Tour starts in ’09. He has yet to tee it up in a PGA Tour event this season but tied for 19th in his European Tour start at the Abu Dhabi Championship three weeks ago and tied for ninth in his last start at Qatar the week before last.

The winner of the Johnson/Villegas match could meet two-time Accenture Match Play champion Geoff Ogilvy in the second round if Ogilvy defeats Alexander Noren in his opening match.

There’s a couple good twentysomething battles in the first round of Accenture Match Play Championship. Michael Sim meets Ryo Ishikawa and Hunter Mahan takes on Charl Schwartzel.
