Keeping an eye on Watson

RSS

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Here’s another nice little nugget that just popped into my head several minutes ago. Tom Watson may just qualify for the U.S. Open next year at Congressional if he can somehow finish inside the top-15.

Early in the week Watson sat down and reminisced about his love affair with Pebble Beach, including his Open victory here in 1982. He thanked the USGA again for extending him a special exemption into this championship, one he said could likely be his last. Then after a third-round 70, Watson mentioned that he’d like to come back to the U.S. Open again if he were able to win the U.S. Senior Open, which gives an Open exemption to its winner.

He may not need to win the Senior Open. Watson will begin the final round tied for 16th place at 6 over par. It’s difficult to predict how the course is going to play but shooting anything around even par will earn Watson a trip to Congressional next year.
