Kerr leads LPGA sights set on No 1

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Cristie Kerr may have just one major championship title to her credit, but she’s becoming a fixture on major championship leaderboards.

Kerr’s 4-under-par 68 was good for a share of the lead after Thursday’s first round of the LPGA Championship. She’s finished among the top 10 in six of the last eight majors. That includes a second, a third and a fifth.

At No. 5 in the world, Kerr is aiming at the No. 1 spot Ai Miyazato claimed this week. A major goes a long way toward that goal.

“As far as No. 1, I’m right in there,” said Kerr, who won her last start, the LPGA State Farm Classic two weeks ago. “I just have to keep doing what I’m doing. I just have to keep working hard, working hard on the mental stuff, believe in myself. I’ve started the right way.

“You know Ai has been really hot winning four tournaments of the first nine this year. I’m going to have to do some special stuff for the rest of the year, but it can be done.”
