Kings of Distance: Farmers Insurance Open

RSS

Each week on GolfChannel.com, we’ll take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest drives on the PGA Tour. Here are the five most important distance-related stats from the Farmers Insurance Open, won by Scott Stallings:

Driving distance (longest drive): David Lingmerth 368 yards

The diminutive Swede may not seem like the player who would uncork the longest drive of the week, but he did so at Torrey Pines en route to a T-47 finish. A runner-up last year at TPC Sawgrass, Lingmerth's ultra-long drive was nearly 100 yards longer than his 2013 average of 285.8 yards, which placed him 108th on Tour in the category last season.

Recent leaders: Scott Piercy and Jhonattan Vegas, 352 yards (Humana), Charlie Beljan, 368 yards (Sony); Webb Simpson, 397 yards (Hyundai); Alvaro Quiros, 368 yards (Mayakoba)

Driving distance average: Bubba Watson, 309.9 yards

Though he has yet to win since his breakthrough triumph at the 2012 Masters, Watson has long been one of the Tour's longest hitters and his prowess off the tee was on full display this week in San Diego. Watson tied for 23rd this week at 3 under, six shots off the pace, after closing with a 3-under 69 Sunday.

Recent leaders: Harris English, 309.6 yards (Humana), Jimmy Walker, 319.5 (Sony); Dustin Johnson, 297 yards (Hyundai); Alvaro Quiros, 313.1 yards (Mayakoba)

Carry distance: Bubba Watson, 308.3 yards

Watson set the new bar for carry during the 2013-14 season along the Pacific coastline, surpassing Robert Garrigus' total from Las Vegas. Watson has made a living out of carving high, arcing tee shots and he did so regularly last week at Torrey Pines; after finishing the 2013 season ranked fifth on Tour in driving distance, the southpaw is up to second during the early portion of the 2013-14 wraparound slate.

Recent leaders: Gary Woodland, 297.5 yards (Humana), Charlie Beljan, 286.4 (Sony); Charles Howell III, 286.2 (McGladrey); Robert Garrigus, 303.8 (Vegas)

Clubhead speed: Bubba Watson, 123.41 mph

Watson ended Charlie Beljan's recent dominance of the clubhead speed category in San Diego, although he was unable to match Beljan's speed as recorded the week prior at PGA West. Nevertheless, the stats last week bore out the fact that "Bubba Golf" is fast through the hitting zone, and consequently almost always long off the tee.

Recent leaders: Charlie Beljan, 123.87 (Humana), Charlie Beljan, 123.23 (Sony); Jason Kokrak, 120.22 (McGladrey); Jhonattan Vegas, 123.45 (Vegas)

Ball speed: Bubba Watson, 183.26 mph

Not surprisingly, Watson was atop yet another category last week in San Diego and nearly completed the rare "King of Distance" sweep. His ball speed at Torrey Pines was the highest recorded thus far on Tour during the 2013-14 season, barely surpassing Jhonattan Vegas' total in, of all places, Las Vegas. This was Watson's first start of the calendar year, so expect the eccentric lefty to factor into this weekly recap at least a few more times before the season concludes.

Recent leaders: Seung-yul Noh, 177.87 mph (Humana), Charlie Beljan, 178.62 (Sony); Jason Kokrak, 178.52 (McGladrey), Jhonattan Vegas, 183.16 (Vegas)
