Kings of Distance: Valspar Championship

RSS

Each week on GolfChannel.com, we’ll take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest drives on the PGA Tour. Here are the five most important distance-related stats from the Valspar Championship, won by John Senden:

Longest drive: Charlie Beljan, 375 yards

Beljan’s big blast came on the 575-yard 11th hole in the second round at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course. It didn’t help his tournament chances, however, as he finished third-to-last after 36 holes (74-79).

Recent leaders: Branden Grace, 383 yards (Doral); Rory McIlroy, 370 yards (Honda); Bubba Watson, 362 yards (Riviera); Robert Garrigus, 358 yards (Pebble)

Driving distance: Graham DeLaet, 305.4 yards

The Canadian tied for eighth in Tampa and thus became the sixth consecutive player to top this category and also finish in the top 10 at that tournament.

Recent leaders: Dustin Johnson, 328.8 yards (Doral); Brooks Koepka, 312.3 yards (Honda); Rory McIlroy, 309.8 yards (Honda); Bubba Watson, 318.5 yards (Riviera); Dustin Johnson, 310.9 yards (Pebble)

Carry distance: Morgan Hoffmann, 305.1 yards

The former Oklahoma State standout topped this category for the first time this season, and he notched a top-25 finish at the Valspar.

Recent leaders: Dustin Johnson, 310.8 yards (Doral); Ryan Palmer, 301.9 yards (Honda); Bubba Watson, 309.7 yards (Riviera); Dustin Johnson, 319.5 yards (Pebble)

Clubhead speed: Jason Kokrak, 121.40 mph

Kokrak squandered a chance to win in Tampa, going double bogey-bogey-bogey on his last three holes to finish in a tie for 14th. His category-leading swing speed this week was more than 3 mph slower than Bubba Watson’s total a week ago.

Recent leaders: Bubba Watson, 124.50 mph (Doral); Brooks Koepka, 123.86 mph (Honda); Bubba Watson, 124.11 mph (Riviera); Dustin Johnson, 123.51 mph (Pebble)

Ball speed: Jason Kokrak, 180.12 mph

No surprise, Kokrak also led this category this week, even though his ball speed was more than 4 mph slower than Watson’s at Doral.

Recent leaders: Bubba Watson, 184.26 mph (Doral); Brooks Koepka, 182.45 mph (Honda); Bubba Watson, 184.30 mph (Riviera); Dustin Johnson, 179.78 mph (Pebble)
