DORAL, Fla. – Of all the accolades Martin Kaymer has received since overtaking Lee Westwood atop the World Golf Ranking following last week’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship it was a phone call from Bernhard Langer last Wednesday that resonated with the German.
Langer, the only other German to ever hold the top spot, called Kaymer to congratulate him and offer some advice: “Keep your circle (of friends and advisors) as small as possible.”
But just making it to the top spot is not the extent of Kaymer’s ambitions. His World Ranking goal?
“I’ve been No. 1 in the world for at least seven days, no one can take that from me,’ he smiled. “My goal is to stay there longer than Langer (three weeks).”
