Laughter the best medicine

SAN FRANCISCO – Phil Mickelson got a big laugh from a tough spot off the sixth fairway.

After his partner, Anthony Kim, pulled his tee shot way left and up against a tree, and after Mike Weir ricocheted his tee shot 50 yards backward off another tree, Mickelson provided the levity.

'And this is from the best golf has to offer,' he told the gallery while examining his difficult lie.

They roared.

It got better.

Instead of a drum roll in the moment after Mickelson's crack, a shot from an adjacent fairway practically whistled over Mickelson's head and slammed into a golf cart 20 yards behind Mickelson. Presumably, Ernie Els hit it. He came walking up with a wood in his hands.

'We are in an artillery zone,' a fan shouted out.

That made Mickelson smile.

Mickelson cleverly played his second shot up the wrong fairway (No. 5) to help his team win the hole and take a 1 up lead.

The play hasn't been pretty in this match.
