ORLANDO, Fla. – Phil Mickelson’s pre-Bay Hill tune-up included four days of putting work with Dave Stockton Sr. in the California desert and a scoring first for Lefty.
On Monday in Indio, Calif., Lefty scorched the Plantation Golf Club with 12 birdies and an eagle for a 58. Mickelson said his only other round in the 50s was the 59 he shot at the 2004 PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Hawaii.
But that 58 looked down right uninspired compared to Mickelson’s Friday card at Bay Hill – which included three bogeys, six birdies and a holed-out wedge shot at the par-4 eighth hole for eagle. It all added up to 67, but it sure felt like fifty-something.
