From legendary thrashing to ... coddling?: Ames defending Tiger

RSS

Stephen Ames once was thrashed by Tiger Woods in the WGC-Accenture Match Play by the near-maximum margin of victory of, 9 and 8, for suggesting Woods could be taken with his then-current form. That was five years ago.

Now, Ames, 47, says Woods’ swing has improved immensely since making the switch from Hank Haney to Sean Foley.

“Swing-wise it looks 10 times better than it was before,” Ames told the Postmedia News prior to his Ames Cup tournament. “Sean’s done a wonderful job and, as Sean has mentioned before, he’s not clear upstairs right now. I think it’s going to be awhile before he gets there.”

Of course, the endorsement of Woods’ new swing might have something to do with Ames working with Sean Foley as well. Swing gurus aside, Ames says he finds it incredible Woods is still competing given the fallout from the self-inflicted public lashing.

“It’s quite incredible to be honest if you ask me because I wouldn’t be back out there after what he went through with the media, losing his wife,' Ames said. 'It’s tough. It’s just going to take him awhile to get back.”
