Looking to complete an 'Alabama Slam' and help cement Player of the Year honors in the process, Stacy Lewis got off to a strong start Thursday at the Navistar LPGA Classic.
Lewis fired a 6-under-par 66 in her opening round, moving near the top of the leaderboard as play began in Pratville, Ala. She made her way around the Senator Course at Capitol Hill Thursday without carding a bogey, hitting 16/18 greens in regulation.
Already a winner twice in 2012, Lewis has recorded 13 top-10 finishes in 20 starts this year. She currently leads the Rolex Player of the Year standings over a hard-charging Jiyai Shin, who has won each of the last two LPGA events.
A win this week would give Lewis a clean sweep of the LPGA's Alabama events this year; she captured the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in April by one stroke over Lexi Thompson, who is the defending champion this week in Prattville.
