“This is not a tournament you want to lead after the first day,” Lewis said. “Because it’s hard to maintain that for four days.”
Lewis was the Rolex world No. 1 for four weeks in March and April before Park seized it from her. No. 2 Lewis and No. 3 Suzann Pettersen played with the world No. 1 Park in Thursday’s big three grouping at Sebonack Golf Club.
Park shot 67, Lewis 71 and Pettersen 76. Ha-Neul Kim leads the way after a 6-under 66.
Lewis, a two-time winner already this year, was battling at 1 over before making birdies at two of the final five holes. She’s bidding to win her second major and first U.S. Women’s Open.
“I’m just excited about where my game’s at,” Lewis said.
