Lewis, Kerr lead Americans to 8 LPGA titles in 2012

NAPLES, Fla. – Stacy Lewis boosted some damaged American pride this season.

With four LPGA titles, Lewis helped the United States run up eight titles in 2012, more than any other nation.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that,” Lewis said Wednesday from the season-ending CME Group Titleholders.

Lewis also became the first American in 18 years to win the tour’s Rolex Player of the Year award.

“I wanted to do it for the tour,” Lewis said. “I wanted to do it for all the other American girls, just for everybody to get that pressure off. It’s a ton of pressure. You’ve got the expectations of yourself and your country and your other players.”

With Lewis and Cristie Kerr winning the last two weeks, Americans are enjoying a bit of a resurgence. The eight USA wins are the most LPGA titles in a season by the Americans since they won 10 in 2008.

South Koreans have claimed seven titles this year and could equal the Americans by winning the CME Group Titleholders Championship this week.

Americans won just four LPGA titles last year, four in 2010 and five in '09.
