Lewis named European Tour Rookie of the Year

RSS

A winner in just his third professional start, Englishman Tom Lewis was announced as European Tour Rookie of the Year on Monday.

The 20-year-old won the Portugal Masters in October with a final-round 65, making him the quickest affiliate member to earn victory in tour history.

“I appreciate this (honor) very much. It certainly tops off what has been an amazing year,” said Lewis in a release. “I think my dad is more excited about me winning this award than my first tour victory in October! ”

Before turning pro with a T-10 finish at the Austrian Open, Lewis made a splash as an amateur.

He shared the lead after the first round of the Open Championship, shooting 65, and eventually finished as low amateur. He then helped Great Britain and Ireland upset the highly favored Americans in the Walker Cup.

A panel of R&A and European Tour leaders, as well as European golf writers, awarded the honor to Lewis. They chose Lewis ahead of Dane Thorbjørn Olesen and Scott Jamieson of Scotland.
