Lewis set to defend at Founders Cup, recapture No. 1

PHOENIX – Stacy Lewis couldn’t resist.

As she walked by the fairway bunker along the left side of the 16th hole in a practice round Tuesday at the JTBC Founders Cup, she turned to her caddie, Travis Wilson.

“I asked him if he wanted to have some fun in that bunker over there,” Lewis said. “I said, `You can make a snow angel or drag your foot through it.’ But he walked away pretty quickly.”

That bunker is where Wilson incurred a two-shot penalty for testing the surface of the sand in the third round last year. It meant Lewis had to come from four shots back to win on Sunday instead of just two shots back. She did, in fact, win.

“It’s something we can laugh about, thankfully,” Lewis said.

Wilson, by the way, was named the LPGA Caddie of the Year by his peers last year.

With her Founders Cup victory, Lewis vaulted to No. 1 in the Rolex world rankings, holding the top spot for four weeks before Inbee Park claimed it.

Lewis enters the LPGA domestic opener at Marriott’s Wildfire Golf Club No. 3 in the world rankings behind Park and No. 2 Suzann Pettersen.

“I would like to get back to No. 1 just because I know now what to expect,” Lewis said. “I think I know how to handle it a little better.”
