After an opening 4-over 74 at Royal Mayfair Golf Club, world No. 2 Stacy Lewis did not mince words about what might be her best course of action.
'Honestly, I need to get away from it right now,' she told reporters Thursday. 'Probably the best thing I could do is just walk away.'
Friday, she did just that.
Still reeling from last week's loss at the Solheim Cup, Lewis withdrew from the CN Canadian Women's Open prior to the start of the second round, which she was slated to begin at 1:25 MT alongside Karrie Webb and Lorie Kane, reportedly citing illness. Her opening score, which included five bogeys across her first seven holes, left her nine shots behind co-leaders Angela Stanford, Lydia Ko and Christel Boeljon.
Lewis was the top-ranked player competing last week at Colorado Golf Club and fresh off her win at the Ricoh Women's British Open, but compiled a disappointing 1-2-1 individual record that included a pair of losses during the opening day of competition. Team Europe defeated the Americans by an 18-10 score, the largest margin of victory in the event's history.
The two-time major champion was one of 11 members of the American team in this week's field north of the border, with only Lizette Salas opting not to play. Each of the 12 players on the victorious European squad teed it up at Royal Mayfair Thursday, including 17-year-old Charley Hull, who opened with a 1-under 69.
Following her round Thursday in Edmonton, Lewis made it clear that the Solheim defeat was still affecting her days later.
'I didn't hit the ball very good and the start just didn't help. I was tired out there,' she added after carding seven total bogeys against three birdies. 'Mentally, I wasn't in it. Just coming off the last week is still tough.'
Friday morning, Lewis took to Twitter to address the withdrawal:
I'm sorry to all my fans, that was the first time I have pulled out of an event. The craziness of the last few weeks finally hit me.— Stacy Lewis (@Stacy_Lewis) August 23, 2013
