Little-known Kelly fires Saturday 62

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson each missed the cut at this week’s Greenbrier Classic … but that may not even be the biggest shocker so far.

That’s because Troy Kelly posted an 8-under 62 in the third round to climb the leaderboard and put himself into contention for the first time ever at a PGA Tour event.

“If you look at my statistics, my ranking’s not very good in the putting category, so it’s just good to see some putts go in,” he said after posting a career low score. “I had fun today. It was a fun round.”

How surprising was Kelly’s performance? Consider this: In 14 previous starts this season, he has only made the cut six times, with a best finish of T-37 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. In fact, that ranks as his best career result in 33 starts.

He’s looking forward to contending on Sunday.

“It will be a different stage tomorrow,” he said. “I think tomorrow will be a good learning experience for me.”
