Long way from Dubai to Q-School

RSS

LA QUINTA, Calif. – The metaphorical miles many in this week’s field at Q-School have traveled can’t be measured, but for Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano his odyssey is easily quantifiable – a journey from Dubai on Sunday to the Coachella Valley that stretched some 7,700 miles.

Fernandez-Castano finished tied for ninth at the European Tour’s season finale in Dubai on Sunday and arrived in California Monday morning. When he finally made it to PGA West on Tuesday for an abbreviated practice session he had a predictably sore neck but was otherwise ready for his first, and probably last, Fall Classic.

At 33rd in the Official World Golf Ranking, the six-time European Tour winner is exempt into most events (majors and World Golf Championships) but with this being the final Q-School with direct access to the PGA Tour, he wanted to give it a try according to his manager Rocky Hambric with Hambric Sports Management.

Fernandez-Castano is one of five players who made the trek from Dubai and the European finale to California, giving the Fall Classic an international feel that it may never have again.
