ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Yes, ladies and gentleman, John Daly is leading the Open Championship. Fifteen years after Long John dazzled the Old Course with long drives and a stellar shortgame, he's back and shot a first-round 66 to share the lead in the clubhouse.
Daly made seven birdies and a bogey for his 66. Andrew Coltart also shot 66 and birdied the 18th hole.
Daly seemed calm all day in the calm conditions and had several more birdie attempts that could have dropped. He was at 7 under on the 17th hole but hit his approach over the back of the narrow green. He failed to get up-and-down and made his first bogey of the day there.
On the home hole, Daly hit a long drive and chipped to about 10 feet. His birdie putt hit the hole but rimmed out and he made par.
Shortly after Daly finish, Rory McIlroy made birdie on the par-5 14th hole to get to 7 under. But he still has four holes remaining.
