In Mike Weir’s quest to regain PGA Tour status, the 2003 Masters winner has little margin for error in each start. Ahead of this week’s Mayakoba Golf Classic an error he could not control may have cost him a chance at a paycheck.
UPS lost the Canadian’s passport, leaving Weir unable to get to Mexico in time to play a practice round to prepare for his first start in the event.
“UPS lost his passport in their Louisville depot (UPS systems were down so they couldn't track for several days). The passport should have gotten to Mike last week,” said Dave Haggith of IMG, who represents Weir, according to the Globe and Mail.
“The package was found on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Mike flew to Louisville to pick up the package, then flew to Cancun arriving almost at midnight."
Weir opened with an 8-over 79, tied for the fifth-worst first-round score in the 132-man field.
