Love, Olazabal give speeches at opening ceremony

MEDINAH, Ill. – It’s funny. Professional golfers play under the most intense pressure, hit golf shots with thousands of people watching in person and millions watching on television.

Yet, the thing that makes many Ryder Cup captains the most nervous is the speech at the opening ceremony. Add Davis Love III and Jose Maria Olazabal to this list.

There were no real gaffes by either man. The biggest hiccup came from Love when he announced Jim Furyk was from Sea Island, Ga., instead of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

“If that’s the only mistake I made in that speech …” Love said. “Ollie got through it without crying about Seve (Ballesteros), I was crying when he was talking about Seve.

“It’s over. He and I can celebrate that the speeches are done and the pomp and circumstance is over and that we can go play.”
