KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III will name his final two assistant captains early Monday in Charleston, S.C., and, although Captain America has been guarded about his final two assistants, the list of potential candidates seems shallow.
Speculation at Kiawah suggests that Love has narrowed the field to Justin Leonard, David Toms and Scott Verplank. Leonard and Toms are widely considered candidates for a future captaincy, while Verplank, who withdrew from the PGA Championship with a hip ailment, is a two-time Ryder Cup player and popular in the team room.
Love is not above throwing a curveball, however. Earlier this year he named Fred Couples, along with Mike Hulbert, an assistant despite speculation that Boom Boom’s third term as the U.S. Presidents Cup captain would preclude him from a job this year at Medinah.
