LPGA to honor rules official Brecht

LPGA pros will pay tribute to Doug Brecht wearing “Doug” stickers the rest of the 2012 season.

Brecht, 62, a tour rules official for 22 years, died Friday from the West Nile virus.

The stickers, tour officials note, have “Oklahoma” red in them. That’s Brecht’s alma mater.

Brecht’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. CT at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Norman, Okla., the city where Brecht resided. A memorial service also will be held Thursday at the LPGA KEB-HanaBank Championship in Seoul, South Korea. A moment of silence is planned at LPGA headquarters in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.

Also, the LPGA announced the establishment of the Doug Brecht Fund to help the Brecht family with outstanding medical bills and funeral service costs. Unused portions of the fund will be donated to Operation School Bell, a local charity that Doug and his wife, Stephanie, helped that provides clothing to underprivileged kids, and also to the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute at Oklahoma City Baptist Hospital. Donations can be sent to the Doug Brecht Fund, Banc First of Norman, P.O. Box 988, Norman, OK, 73070.
