LPGA, Kingsmill agree to four-year extension

RSS

The LPGA announced Tuesday that it has agreed to a four-year extension with Xanterra, the parent company of Kingsmill Resort, an agreement that will keep the Tour's annual stop in Williamsburg, Va., on the schedule through 2017.

The 10th edition of the Kingsmill Championship will be played next season from May 15-18, when Cristie Kerr will defend the title she won earlier this year in a playoff over Suzann Pettersen. The event's purse will be $1.3 million in 2014, the same amount of prize money offered this year.

'Everything about Kingsmill is top-notch,' said LPGA commissioner Michael Whan as part of a release announcing the extension. 'I'm so excited about our long-term partnership, as it ensures that we'll continue this wonderful tradition of showcasing the best golfers in the world at one of the best golf resorts in the world.'

The River Course at Kingsmill Resort hosted an LPGA event from 2003 to 2009, a stretch during which it produced a list of winners that included Se Ri Pak (2004), Karrie Webb (2006) and Annika Sorenstam (2008) among others. After a two-year hiatus, the event returned to the schedule in 2012 with Jiyai Shin outlasting Paula Creamer in a nine-hole playoff.
