NAPLES, Fla. – Stacy Lewis won her battle with Inbee Park for the Rolex Player of the Year award last week, but the duo enter the CME Group Titleholders this week still battling for two important season-ending awards.
The LPGA money title and the Vare Trophy for low scoring average are still in play.
Park is the frontrunner to win the money title with $2,266,638 in earnings. Lewis is second, trailing by $402,682. If Lewis wins this week to take the $500,000 first-place check, and Park fails to finish at least solo second, Lewis will also win the money title.
Lewis is the first American in 18 years to win the Rolex Player of the Year award. If she wins the money title, she will be the first American to do that in 19 years. Beth Daniel was the last American to win the POY award in '94, Betsy King the last American to win the money title in '93.
Park leads the Vare Trophy race with a 70.20 scoring average. Lewis is third with a 70.26 average. Jiyai Shin is second at 70.25 but doesn’t have enough starts to be eligible for the award.
