BETHESDA, Md. – As triple-digit heat bore down on Congressional CC on Friday, Hunter Mahan embraced it to take the lead at the AT&T National.
Mahan shot 6-under 65 to take the lead by two shots at 7 under par. He birdied two of the last three holes to break out from a trio of players at 5 under and take the lead alone heading into the weekend.
Robert Garrigus, Brendon de Jonge and Jimmy Walker are all tied for second. Garrigus, who shot 67, recorded his sixth consecutive under-par round at Congressional.
Tiger Woods shot one higher than Garrigus, but moved into contention to win this event for a second time. Woods' 68 took him to 2 under for the tournament and T-10.
Five players are 4 under, tied for fifth: Pat Perez, Seung-yul Noh, Rod Pampling, Vijay Singh and Stewart Cink.
Teen Beau Hossler will play on the weekend, shooting 3-over 74 after an opening round of 71.
Only 17 players finished the first 36 holes under par. The cut came at 6 over, two shots higher than the cut at last year's U.S. Open at the same venue.
