Mahan shaky on brink of Presidents Cup

NORTON, Mass. – If Fred Couples were following Hunter Mahan’s start to the Deutsche Bank Championship, he couldn’t have liked what he was seeing.

Couples will make his two captain’s picks for the U.S. Presidents Cup team on Tuesday and has already told Mahan and Lucas Glover he intends to pick them.

In Friday’s first round, Mahan started with four bogeys and a double bogey to balloon to 6-over after seven holes.

Mahan bounced back with five birdies to get down to 1-over, then made another double bogey before closing with a birdie for a 2-over 73.

David Toms, a guy who would like to change Couples’ mind, shot 67. Brian Gay, another player who like to make Couples re-think his choices, shot 70.
