Mallon to Solheim players: Don't rely on captain's pick

RSS

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – U.S. Solheim Cup captain Meg Mallon doesn’t want any of her prospective players hoping for a captain’s pick.

With six events left before the American team is announced, three of them major championships with double points, Mallon is watching to see who rises to the occasion.

Mallon played on eight Solheim Cups.

“I qualified for every team I made, and that’s why I kind of have the mentality that if you don’t make the team, you don’t make the team,” Mallon said. “If you’re not in the top eight and you’re not one of the two qualifiers on the Rolex rankings, then you shouldn’t expect to be on the team. That’s how I felt when I played. I made sure I made the team.”

The top eight in the American point standings automatically qualify for the team at the conclusion of the Ricoh Women’s British Open. The top two from the American Solheim Cup Rolex rankings list also qualify. Mallon also gets two captain’s picks.

The Solheim Cup is scheduled Aug. 16-18 at Colorado Golf Club. Mallon took nine prospective team members to dinner on Tuesday night: Stacy Lewis, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Angela Stanford, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Lizette Salas, Jessica Korda and Lexi Thompson.

“I said don't worry about getting points,' Mallon said. “Keep concentrating on winning golf tournaments.'
