Only two players in the field at the Trophee Hassan II can earn a berth into the Masters this week. Robert Rock and Matteo Manassero can crack the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking, but qualifying for the Masters is only possible with a win.
Manassero trails Damien McGrane by four shots heading into the second round in Morocco. McGrane shot a 7-under 65, while the Italian made seven birdies en route to a 69 to sit in an eight-way tie for 10th.
Obviously I would love to win here and match the victory with qualifying for the Masters. It is definitely a goal, but I just have to see what happens, Manassero said. The main thing is I am playing good golf and putting well, but you really have to be careful around this golf course.
The Masters hopes of Rock may already be dashed as Rock shot a 77 at Golf du Palais Royal to trail by a dozen shots. He is T-102 with 10 other players, including John Daly.
Rock hopes to maintain his focus for the remaining rounds, or at least to get to the weekend.
The Masters was hopefully going to be the result of a good week, and I was really looking forward to coming here and playing this course, but that is probably not going to be now, and I have to find some way of finding the interest to play the rest of the week because I am out of touch now, he said.
