Matsuyama leads U.S. Open qualifiers in Japan

Two-time Asia-Pacific Amateur champion Hideki Matsuyama earned medalist honors at the 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Japan on Monday.

Matsuyama, 21, who turned pro earlier this year and already has moved inside the top 85 in the world, shot rounds of 67-65 to post 8-under 132 at Ohtone Country Club and clinch one of the five available spots for the June 13-16 U.S. Open at Merion.

The other players who earned berths: Jung-Gon Hwang (4 under), Yui Ueda (3 under), and Yoshinobu Tsukada and Hiroyuki Fujita (2 under) prevailed in a playoff to secure the final spots.

Walton Heath in England also hosted a 36-hole qualifier on Monday, where there was expected to be about 10 spots up for grabs.
