AKRON, Ohio – If Tiger Woods looked infallible from outside the ropes on Friday, you can imagine how impressive he looked from nearby.
Hideki Matsuyama, the 21-year-old from Japan who already has a pair of top-10 finishes at majors this year, had an up-close-and-personal viewing of Woods’ round of 9-under 61.
“It was great looking at great play at the top of the world,” said Matsuyama, who posted a 68 of his own. “This is my rookie year, and I had a great chance to see the world No. 1 player, playing together.”
Asked whether he was aware that Woods was chasing a 59, he added, “I knew that he was looking like maybe 57 or 56 possibly, but he was not making much putts on the last stretch, so it was a good lesson for me looking at his play, and I really enjoyed playing with him.”
