McDowell back on major championship horse

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – Graeme McDowell has quickly jumped back on the major championship horse, shooting 3-under 67 Thursday in the first round of the British Open. He’s three shots behind leader Adam Scott.

Last month at the U.S. Open, McDowell bogeyed Nos. 13 and 14 while in contention then was gutted on the 18th when he failed to make a birdie that would’ve sent him into a playoff with Webb Simpson.

McDowell collected six birdies and three bogeys Thursday at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, a place he enjoys and a place he believed he’d contend.

“There’s no reason why I shouldn’t challenge,” McDowell said. “But I’ve got a lot of work to do to do so. I do like the way this golf course sets up. I like the challenge it presents, and I love the way the greens look.

“I can hit the ball better than I did this morning, but a little bit of work and we’ll be ready tomorrow morning.”
