MARANA, Ariz. – Graeme McDowell arrived for the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship rested and highly motivated to turn his record around in this event.
McDowell, who clinched Europe’s Ryder Cup victory at Celtic Manor last fall with his clutch performance in the anchor match against Hunter Mahan, is 1-4 at the Accenture Match Play.
“I am keen to try to change that,” McDowell said after a practice round Monday at The Ritz Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain.
McDowell meets Heath Slocum in Wednesday’s first round at 10:45 a.m. (ET). After playing seven consecutive weeks at the end of last year and twice in January, McDowell took the last month off.
In his last eight starts, McDowell’s won twice and finished third three times.
“People ask you, `Why aren’t you playing Dubai, San Diego, Phoenix?' It's crazy, you really can play every week, there are so many opportunities, but you have to force yourself to pace yourself . . . I felt like for my freshness and general sanity, I had to wear a little groove on my couch.”
McDowell said he went to the Super Bowl in his time off the last month, worked on his new house at Lake Nona outside Orlando and watched a lot of sports on TV.
