Former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell is in Dubai for this week's DP World Tour Championship, but a visit to the country two weeks ago was largely for a different reason.
McDowell confirmed to reporters that he recently got engaged to long-time girlfriend Kirstin Stape, asking for her hand in marriage atop the 656-foot high helipad at the Burg Al Arab Hotel in Dubai.
"I did it properly, getting down on one knee," he explained while preparing for this week's season finale on the European Tour. "She was very shocked and had no idea what was going on."
McDowell met the U.S.-born Stape when he contacted her interior design company to decorate his Orlando-area home. The Ulsterman indicated to reporters that he had made a quick stop in Dubai two weeks ago for a practice round - as well as the engagement - before heading to the Australia for the Talisker Masters, where he finished tied for eighth.
