ORLANDO, Fla. – Wandered out to Bay Hill’s 18th hole late Friday to watch some golf and saw a train wreck.
These are the facts. Graeme McDowell stepped to the 18th tee at 1 under for the tournament, safely inside the cut which fell at 2 over. From the middle of the final fairway the Northern Irishman’s approach sailed into a back bunker, he failed to get his third out of the sand, caught his fourth thin and narrowly avoided the water hazard by a foot, chipped short, missed the 11-foot putt for double bogey, missed his next putt from inside 2 feet and tapped in for a snowman-8 that dropped him to 3 over and out of the weekend action.
All this, it should be noted, came after McDowell three-putted the 17th from 28 feet.
Word is McDowell was last seen dragging his putter behind his courtesy car on his way back home to Lake Nona, but that was unconfirmed.
